Living in another country is not about having a different time but about learning about it and its culture!

Living in another country is not about having a different time but about learning about it and its culture!

And my last weekend was defiantly one of those!
Our trip to Johannesburg started early on Friday morning, right after we brought the children to Kammaland. We drove with a bus from Pietermaritzburg for about 6 hours.  Suddenly we heard a big buuum, I thought something hit our bus, but the tire was broken. Hmmm, nice start to begin with. We had to change to another bus and we were friendly welcomed:” Don’t you have enough money to travel? ”, a black woman asked us, since it was one of the cheaper buses.

We finally made our way to Parkstation and looked for a taxi to get to our Couchsurfer. But none of the drivers knew the address and the phone number he gave us was not working. So we asked a policeman to help us. He tried to explain the way and finally said that he will take us, unless it is a problem for us to drive with his car. So when we arrived at the Couchsurfers house, he was not there and the area he lived in wasn’t looking to good.
Finally we got to meet Pie and everything was forgotten. He is such a funny and warm character. He told us that he is from Rwanda and first lived in exile in South Africa, no he helps other refugees and gives readings about his refugee and new live! Really interesting! With him we were even able to walk to the supermarket in the dark. This evening he cooked spinach from his garden with cassava for us. It was a long evening because Pie liked dancing a lot and gave us lessons in Kizumba and Bassata all evening long!

The next morning we went to the Neighborgoodsmarket in Braamfontein,
where you could buy lots of special food and even got to try some: D it was delicious! One highlight was a coconut where we could drink from.

Afterwards we went to an Art Gallery. Than we had to walk across the Nelson Mandela Bridge while it was raining until we reached the Market Theater. We didn’t look at it for long but tried to flee into a coffee to warm up with a Milo (Hot Chocolate). In this Coffee there was something like a poetry slam going on, they even sang. This was one of the things you would never get to know in a normal vocation.

Our last stop for this day was the Carlton Centre, the tallest building of Africa, where we had an impuissant view over Joburg :)

To get back to Pie’s house we had to take a Minibus taxi of which we were afraid driving with. We looked for one with many women in it, but we didn’t feel really comfortable. But what should you do, its public transport: D
After we arrived we cooked a German meal. Knödel and Kartoffelpuffer…

The evening program was dancing in a Reggae Club “House of Thandoor”, in the jewel of Joburg. At first everybody looked at you because we were the only whites in there, but later on many women came and showed us some African dancing. Totally different compared to our dancing. But they can move their hips so much better than we can. Back home we kept on dancing until the middle of the night.

This caused the tired feeling the next morning. But we decided to go to Arts of Main. Also this time we had to get there with the public transport, but since Pie came along we felt much safer.
After walking around and eating a self-made Frozen Yoghurt we watched Pie dancing on the “Rooftop Salsa” before we finally decided to get in there too. We danced (not as good as he did of course) and had conversations with Zulu guys about their culture. This was something really interesting to learn about!

Again, we decided to go to the “House of Thandoor” to dance. The “Rooftop Salsa” DJ gave us a lift. Since he was born in Ethiopia, grew up in New York and was hungry haha Pie decided to take him to a restaurant with typical African food: A type of black fish with chips and cassava.  All eaten with the fingers and I tried it, it was really nice; D Once again we had a really nice evening!
On Monday we made our way back to Greytown, without any problems :)
This weekend was way to short but it was simply wonderful and we learned a lot about the Zulu and Rwanda Culture :)
Have a nice Friday and a nice weekend, I send you tons of sun since the weather was good until it started to hail couple hours ago.

Time flies by way to fast...

Hello everybody,

this last week school started again. We had to wrap the books of the kids all day long- well, it felt like this… But the best thing is, that all my children are back and the house is full of life again: D

On Wednesday I also had to get up early because it was the first day of school. The Toddlers now all go to another group, the one for the older ones, so it was a little confusing the first day, but I think now the all like it and are happy, more or less ;)

On Thursday evening Charly, Helena and myself decided to spent the weekend in Durban, it was really a spontaneous thought but we had a supergreat weekend!

To begin with we had a lift from a dentist, working in Greytown but living with his parents in Durban for the weekend. We arrived safely in Durban and got to meet our couch surfer, William. He is full of energy and really nice. So our home for the weekend was in New Germany, but honestly I have no clue why it is called like this. This evening we just talked, walked around and felt asleep while watching a movie. Also William’s 12 year old daughter Danny was with us.
We got up early and had some cereal for breakfast, yummy :D
Afterwards we visited the Shangweni Farmers market where you could buy everything…from food, to hippie cloth, recycled stuff, puzzles to jewelry. It was really nice :)
Because it was a freaking hot day we spent the time afterwards at the beach. While bathing, a guy tried to steal Helena’s bag, but we managed to get it back. It was a shock though.
We wanted  to walk on the Durban stadium but sadly it wasn’t open, so we just got ready for dinner. I had delicious Fish & Chips! (Mama! Bitte mach mal wieder Fisch, wenn ich zu Hause bin, den vermisse ich!! :))

The next morning we went to a market again. ,, The Stables” was really different though. This time you could really buy everything, starting with a book to bath utensils.

This market had an Indian touch. We walked around and finally had Samosas
  to eat.
Afterwards we had a cocktail in a beach bar while listening to some live Reggae music. The last stop for this weekend was an Art Gallery, called BAT-Centre, for a Jazz Sundowner. We got to know two Germans, one volunteer at this Centre and one emigrant, and good conversations about Africa with positive and negative sides.

The last highlight for this day was a stop in the middle of the night through our lift, the dentist. He bought us some caramel sticks and an Indian milkshake. Not normal Strawberry Shake, no one with nuts, sesame and gummy worms. It tasted really interesting!

Yesterday it was so hot here in Greytown that we spent the afternoon in the green pool with the children, which was a nice thing to do. And yes, while the pumps were not working properly the pool is green.

So this was everything new from Greytown, hope you have an nice week  :D

Last week of the holidays

Hello everybody,
Another week just passed by and we still have holidays :D
But in the last three days most of our kids came back and it is really nice to see them :)
In the last week we continued having our holiday program for the children who stayed here.
Sadly we were not able to have the bonfire but we decided to bake the Stockbrot as usual bread for the children. But while the yeast stood too long it was really salty. Haha
The following day it was the “Idol day”. The children sang songs, often Zulu songs in groups or alone. They were so ambitious and it was nice listening to them. One group even sang a song with my name in it :)

My favorite day was probably “Painting the Recycle”. We had the task to color a big recycle bin with the children. It was a really hard task since not all kids wanted to listen and draw what they were supposed to. But I think in the end with a little help of the aunties and some improvements it turned out nicely.

On Thursday evening we had a party for the older children. We baked some cake and bought chips and soft drinks. All in all I think they liked it and we took a lot of pictures together.

We also had a relaxing weekend and just went on a hike to one of the hills surrounding Greytown.
This was a short post from me this time. School will start on Wednesday and then workaday will be back. Hope you will have a nice week :)

Happy new year... :D

Happy new year to everybody :)
Yes, we celebrated New Year’s Eve not in Greytown. We went to Durban, stayed there for one night with coach surfers and rent a car to drive to the Wildcoast. We stayed in Mdumbi for five nights.

But at first let me tell you about our night in Durban. Our surfers, an older couple, hosted us and showed us the University of Kwa Zulu Natal while we took their dogs for a walk there. Afterwards we cooked dinner together and at the night they drove us to “Amsterdam” where Charly, Leonie and I had a huge cocktail.
Merle, ich musste an dich denken :*

The next morning we picked up our car, a VW polo, and managed to fit all in there (we are six girls).

After a long and rough drive we finally arrived in the middle of nowhere. Out hostel was beautiful and we slept again in a hut, but this time it was a bigger one. The following days we were at the beach and just relaxed in the hostel’s living room. We were able to play cards with some other guys.
On New Year’s Eve there was a party organized from the backpackers.  Sadly it rained all day so the bonfire took place on the beach the day after.
But we had some snacks and danced to some music. Even though it didn’t feel like a new year is coming it was a nice evening.

On the hottest day, 2nd of January, we decided to watch the beautiful sunrise.

Afterwards we planned to go to Hole in the Wall. On our way to coffee bay some of the township children threw a wooden stick in front of our car to claim some sweeties, we were shocked how rude those boys were since the townships there are in good conditions. It is a nine kilometer walk through the Xhosa land to get there. But we decided to walk along the coast, which was supposed to be a really beautiful trail. But it took us sooo long, that we were not able to make our way back before it would get dark. So a pick up stopped and we could hop on its back.  Back in the hostel, two guys from the hostel gave a little concert and it was really nice to listen to. Afterward the other girls had to “kill” almost five liters of wine with our new friends and I just say that it was a nice evening ;)

And yes they all had a hangover, so I was able to make fun of them: D
Later that day we went to the beach for a walk and as a highlight for the last day we saw dolphins :)

They were really close and just beautiful to look at. Another highlight was the seafood meal in the evening in out hostel.

Our way back was also interesting because we were just off the gravel road and were stopped in a police control since we were one person to much in our car. We should pay 300 rands but after long discussions we paid “give me something that makes me smile “100 rands, which the police woman put in her own wallet. We were shocked how corrupted the police is. As breakfast we bought Scones, which are little rolls you normally eat with jam and cream, but mine had raisin in it.
Back in the Children’s Home a new girl was waiting for us. Her name is Helena and she is from Ravensburg.

Since the holidays are still going on, we have a holiday program.
Two days ago we went to Durban beach with the smaller children. For them it was really a nice thing to see the ocean, but for us it was a hard time since we went to a beach where only in small area it was allowed to go swimming.

In this area only colored people went swimming. The lifeguards runned around and advised the people strictly, aside they were permanently blowing in a whistle, how annoying. We all had to take care of four children which were really hard to find in this big crowed.
After having a burger as lunch we made our way back home.

In the evenig we had to say goodbye to Klara and had as usual when someone leaves us a nice dinner together...

Yesterday we played a running game with the children. They all had so much fun and this caused that we had to play it again today. But today we had the theme “Hobo”. As the big final we were supposed to have a bonfire with bread on wooden stocks but then there came up a thunder storm…
I think we will just do it tomorrow than.
I will tell you about it.
Love Fredo
